The Youth Sailing Program aims to teach the art of sailing to youth and, for those who are interested, introduce them to the sport of sailboat racing. The youth sailors learn on the club-owned fleet of Optimist Prams, Lasers and Club 420s.

The DCYC youth program is open to new sailors as well as the advanced racer ranging in ages from 7 to 19 years old.
The program focuses on developing basic sailing skills taught in Optimist Prams and BIC Opens. The kids will perfect the basics of rigging and sailing their Optis or BICs in straight lines on and off the wind; capsize recovery; identifying points of sail, where the wind is coming from and sail trim. They will begin to learn how to start a race and make their way around the race course and the responsibility of caring for the boats and equipment.
As the sailors advance, they will be more focused on improving specific skills; be able to sail in any breeze condition; understanding wind shifts; perfect maneuvers and develop strategies for racing.
When the sailor is ready, they typically progress on to a Laser or 420. These are used by many high school and collegiate teams and at TSA circuit events. They are both designed for those older kids that have aged or sized out of the smaller boats.
The club has boats available for use.
