KELLY HOLMES-MOON MEMORIAL AWARD

Kelly Holmes-Moon was a tireless volunteer in many areas at DCYC, where he served on the Board of Governors and as head of the Education Committee for many years. He was pivotal in bringing a fleet of J/24s to form Fleet 163 and he was a leader in redeveloping the University of North Texas Sailing Team program by teaching and offering a J/24 for them to compete in the Texas Circuit and Nationals in Dillon, Colorado. Together with Michele Ditmer, head of the Junior Activities Committee, the education and racing program was restructured to teach young sailors the fine art of racing in order to prepare them to compete in the Texas Sailing Association and other national events from USODA to the J/24 Worlds. Not one to leave out the opportunity to teach sailing and racing tactics to others, Kelly’s junior education classes routinely brought in many adults as well. Kelly could often be seen around the club socializing or working on boats. He always had a word of advice to people working on their boats, and was never known to be a man of few words. He would hold court to anyone that would listen and often encouraged participation in a good debate on any range of subjects. Kelly was a man that never met a stranger. He valued friendships as if they were his family members and was loyal to those he called his “brothers and sisters.”

This award is presented at the annual membership meeting in November to the member who exemplifies the “spirit of brotherhood/sisterhood” as Kelly did on a daily basis. This perpetual trophy was donated in November 2016 by Bob & Carmen Sittel. For the years 2016-2020, the recipient is selected by Kelly’s widow, Tonja Holmes-Moon. From 2021 on, the recipient is selected by the Vice Commodore.
